Three-day Training Program on Trade, Human Rights and Gender: The Current Policy Landscape & Opportunities for Advocacy

Together with Amnesty International UK, Trade Justice Movement (TJM), and the Gender and Development Network (GADN), CORE hosted a three-day training program from 12-14 June on Trade, Human Rights and Gender.
Innovation Forum: How business can tackle modern slavery and forced labour
March 7-8th 2018
This multi-stakeholder conference hosted by the Innovation Forum provided discussion on how individual businesses can tackle modern slavery in their supply chains and business operations. Director of CORE, Marilyn Croser, spoke on a panel session on ‘An NGO perspective: What are the emerging risk areas and what’s still missing from companies’ current approaches’.

Effective Remedy and Women’s Rights

As part of the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights 2017, CORE was involved in a parallel session on effective remedy and women’s rights. CORE, along with Womankind Worldwide, UK Gender and Development Network, AWID, Landesa and other women’s advocacy organisations, hosted a panel discussion on ‘Women’s rights and land intensive investment: What does meaningful access to remedy look like?’
LSE Short Course: “A Practical Introduction to Business and Human Rights”
4-5 July 2017, Centre for the Study of Human Rights, LSE
This two-day course aimed to introduce participants to the latest academic work, most innovative company practices and investor and civil society outlooks on business and human rights. Day one focused on understanding business and human rights advocacy and remedy for business-related human rights abuses. Day two concentrated specifically on businesses’ perspectives on the corporate responsibility to respect human rights.
C20 Summit Workshop: “Fostering Sustainable Supply Chains and Responsible Business Conduct: G2017 and Beyond”

CORE Director Marilyn Croser spoke alongside actors from civil society, labour, business, and the Government at a C20 workshop on sustainable supply chains and responsible business. Speakers discussed the importance of due diligence and transparency in identifying, preventing, mitigating, and communicating possible human rights or labour rights violations, corruption, and adverse environmental impacts throughout supply chains.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Modern Slavery Statements – One Year On

Brexit Strategies for British & European Civil Society Organisations

This event was organised by the University of Exeter Business School in collaboration with the CORE Coalition and the European Coalition for Corporate Justice. The event brought UK and European civil society organisations together to help coordinate responses to the policy and organisational challenges of Brexit.
Parliamentary roundtable: Women’s empowerment & the role of the private sector in development & responsible business

The All-Party Parliamentary Human Rights Group, in conjunction with CORE & the Gender and Development Network, held a parliamentary event to discuss ways to increase the role of the private sector in supporting women, particularly to further gender equality, advance their rights, and assist them to build more accountable and responsive institutions at all levels.
Doing good business: challenges of corruption and anti-corruption

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Anti-Corruption, The All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Rule of Law and Traidcraft, Amnesty International, CAFOD and the CORE Coalition held a breakfast meeting in advance of the Anti-Corruption Summit. The meeting offered an opportunity to reflect on the limitations of prosecuting large complex companies for a range of serious harms, both economic and personal, affecting the public in the UK and abroad.
Borderless Politics: How & Why Do Large Firms Participate in Political Life?

Borderless Politics, a joint initiative of the universities of Aberdeen and Glasgow seeks to improve society’s understanding of how and why firms participate in public life. This session was an opportunity for civil society practitioners working on corporate accountability and transparency to discuss the project’s initial analysis and the implications for corporate disclosure in the UK and internationally.

Frank Bold and CORE held a civil society roundtable event on corporate governance. The event explored opportunities for collaboration and fed into the development of a new model for corporate governance.

This meeting provided an overview of current debates and processes in the new government, as well as space to share intelligence, ideas, strategies and tactics.
The Phulbari case: lessons for future strategies

This event with Global Justice Now provided a workshop for human rights campaigners, activists and lawyers to learn more about the proposed mine in Phulbari, Bangladesh and the campaign against it, and further to explore campaign strategies around corporate injustices, including: the process of making a UK NCP complaint; potential additional/alternative strategies; and legal/policy reforms needed to improve accountability in similar cases.

Transnational Corporate Human Rights Abuses: Delivering Access to Justice

CORE Coalition and Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, in association with the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL), hosted an afternoon conference to discuss recommendations for actions that should be taken to address the issue, drawing on “The Third Pillar: Access to Judicial Remedies for Human Rights Violations by Transnational Business”, produced by CORE, ICAR and ECCJ, and “Injustice Incorporated” by Amnesty International.
Access to Remedy: Opportunities and challenges for judicial and non-judicial grievance mechanisms

A side-event session at the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights took up some of the issues and recommendations from the plenary discussions on the opening day of the UN Forum: ‘Non-judicial remedy: Is practice on the ground delivering effective remedy outcomes?’ and, ‘Overcoming barriers to effective judicial remedies.’
